Sam Bryant: Engineering in the Medical Field

By Sam Bryant

There was a time when replacement parts were only for thing like cars. Today people themselves are receiving replacement parts and even additions to their bodies. These replacement parts are sometimes replaced with transplants from yourself or someone else. Engineers are making it possible to do without a transplant. How are these engineers and doctor doing this? They are being artificially made by a three-dimensional printer. Engineers were able to create a bio-compatible cells to create tissues and construct whatever the organ is. So far doctor and engineers have been able to construct multi-layered skin, bone, vascular grafts, tracheal splints, heart tissue and cartilaginous structures. This is very interesting because my experience with 3-D printer were for sport not saving a life. That shows that engineering has no boundaries when innovating for our futures.
