Sam Bryant: Freshmen Major Reflection

Coming in to this university, I knew I wanted to pursue engineering just was not sure what type. There are various types of engineering some are similar, others are completely different. Few of my friends I came here with went in to separate engineering fields. I decided to declare a major which was chemical engineering. I researched my major of course it seemed very interesting I my opinion. I just imagined me bringing in big bucks doing something fun for a career. When I actually got in to my classes it was a rude awakening by week 3. I had a chemistry class and a math class I felt were speaking different languages conflicting with each other. When I tried to resolve this problem with an adviser I was told those classes were mandatory for my field. I had to persevere I did my best in the classes. I still was not satisfied with what I had. I did learn a lesson before committing to something as important as a major be real specific with your research (look in to some classes). If I had this advice I would have saved myself much stress.

How Does the Reading Help in Engineering?
If you are good at stimulating your mind being an engineering student, you are more likely to develop great mental capabilities ahead as well. In general, the study also shows that being mentally stimulated no more leads to Alzheimer and mental imperfection like Dementia as well. Undoubtedly, Reading is one of the best brain stimulators that happen to be the basic necessity in order to excel in engineering. For all the apparent reasons, there is something new that’s entering into this industry and mostly it’s as good as an innovation. Especially for the engineers, it turns out to be quite justifiable to study and dig into what’s new in their field that can enhance their skills as well. For that all, reading does help engineers and there’s more to have a glance through especially when it’s about reading, emphatically for engineers;

Knowledge is Power:
Every time you read something, it happens to add up to the knowledge and that’s exactly what makes an engineering student grow day by day. Even a single bit of information takes you one step ahead and gradually you don’t even realize when that info comes in handy for you. As a matter of fact, people occur to be more capable to tackle challenges after being equipped with more knowledge. Adding up just to make it exceptionally appealing, at times one can lose everything including fame, wealth and even health sometimes, but knowledge is something, that nobody can steal from you.

Reading Does Improve Your Memory:
Since there are so many formulae and theories to memorize, it does require an engineer to have strong memorizing abilities. In case of reading, engineering students get to be considerably benefited through this one because even at the time of reading any novel or a story they get to memorize the major plot as well as the twisting point of the story. That’s exactly what makes them capable enough to recall as fast as the glitch.

Enhanced Communication Skills:
A rumored vibe seems to have spread around that engineers are quite introvert as well as shy to communicate. That’s actually quite unjustifiable even for the ones who said it because engineers happen to develop the real crave of spread the knowledge of whatever they have been studying. In fact, they love to make discussions about their fields actually ends up wording out something new from every other corner. Undoubtedly, communication is the key for engineers to spread their knowledge through and especially to the one that are eagerly willing to have it.

Strengthens up Analytical Side:
Being an engineer yourself, you must be having an extremely appreciable analytical skill. For all the apparent reasons, an engineer justifies to have one because this enables them to look into some details. That’s exactly the same thing one happens to be doing while reading and doesn’t even realize as if how much a reader has polished his analytical skills unknowingly. Perhaps that’s the reason for why it’s quite justifiable and even necessary for the engineers to get obsessed with some reading as it turns out to be exceptionally beneficial for them.

Some Writing Skills:
Undoubtedly, a good reader is a good writer and one should have reasonable reading habits in order to write well. In case of engineering students, they already have one especially when they get themselves filled up with so much required info about their profession as well. As a matter of fact, an engineer gets to have an amazing influence over his own work after observing an essence, fluidity as well as the writing style of other authors. In fact, it adds up to the skills to make an engineer much better with his capabilities.

Having said that, the fact won’t really be a phony to state that the “Engineering” has turned out to be one of the most fast-growing and prevailing faculties’ student opt as their professional education. Being a bit more deliberate, it has been found out in a recent survey that that the “Electrical Engineering” embraces the essence of being regarded as one of the most successful professions in this era of modernization!

Sam Bryant: Another Calling for Computer Scientist

With today’s technological advances privacy has become a thing of the past due to the computers mainly. The internet has stripped the world of that privacy. This was caused by the rise of social media, people believe that they have to post everything online. Long gone are the days of having an unlisted telephone number and staying offline to keep your information safe from prying eyes. With basic skills with a computer the average person can find peoples private info (i.e. address, bithdays, etc). The people with more malicious reasoning have multiple ways of getting the most sensitive of information. Which makes a certain type of engineer more important now than ever. This engineer is an computer scientist. A computer scientist is trained in programming computers as well as creating software to defend the user.

Megan Arlt: Prompt #10 Engineering Misrepresented


                                        Engineers are always right... FALSE!


As seen in the picture above some of society and almost ALL engineers have this idea that ENGINEERS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT, but THIS IS NOT TRUE, and it is time for the engineering stereotype to be set straight. Many people look at engineering and generalize it as a field full of geniuses. The common saying "Trust me, I'm an engineer" was derived from the stereotype.  As an engineer I'd like to think i knew everything in but in reality I obviously do not. Engineers are extremely intelegent but a common idea that gets overlook when thinking about an engineer is the trails and error engineers experience. We can't just look at a problem and know the answer. In fact just like authors might have to write and rewrite a book 20 times before it can be published, engineers  often test and retest prototypes multiple times before building the final product.

Prompt #3

I interviewed Jens Muegge, an Engineer Manager at Telsonic Ultrasonics, regarding how he communicates in the field and common misconceptions.


Fiona: What do you write (emails, reports, etc.) and how you write it?


Jens: Using Microsoft Outlook to write and send emails with a standard company reply.  Emails are written in a formal format to be professional when communicating with clients and colleagues. I write reports with Excel or Power Point.


Fiona: What are some common misconceptions in your field?


Jens: Most problems we see are delays with shipments from overseas, caused by holidays in transfer countries, strikes or load incidents. (e.g. strike in the US last year, dock workers in California, shipments from Slovakia go to Germany first (Easter Holidays). Mistakes are a common occurrence, which create these sort of problems.


Fiona: How do you communicate (speak, write, address) to co-workers, clients, etc.?

Jens: With customers: e-mail or phone, online meetings with shared computer screens for design approvals or time lines. With co-workers I usually communicate verbally or via e-mail, Skype if they are in a different country.

How to get an internship and the advantages of doing one



Internships are a very valuable experience to have especially in the engineering field, as it is strongly encouraged. A lot of universities make it accessible for students to engage with companies who come to search for future interns and accept applications. Here are some tips for how to apply for internships:

            -Create a Resume: CORE, a program for undergraduate engineering students, provides help on creating a resume and how to prepare for an interview.

            -Go to events the College of Engineering organizes where companies are invited to accept applications for jobs or internships. MSU has two main career fairs, one in each semester.


            -Think about who you know: If you know someone who works in a firm that hires engineers, see if they can pass on your resume and put in a good word for you.
