In a previous post I explained what Applied Engineer was but how did it become a thing… what’s the history behind it?
It all started in 1961…
- · President Kennedy announced his goal of successfully placing a person on the moon. This caused a huge demand in engineers.
- · During the Vietnam War students were worried about the draft so they started steering away from engineering and more toward social science and liberal arts.
- · Engineering administrators needed to think of a way of recruiting more students into the engineering programs.
- · Michigan State University focused on creating an alternative program that attracted students with a talent in mathematics and science who were currently in other majors.
- · The starting program involved fewer mathematic and science classes but a “Technology, Society, and Public Policy” course was developed and required.
- · Initial concentrations were social science, business, communication arts, and industrial design.
- · The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Arts (name changed to Applied Engineering in 2004) was approved and went into effect in 1973.
…And there you have it, Applied Engineering was a thing!

this was a great post about applied engineering. i really didn't know about the field that much but thought it could be a potential major for me. i like learning the origins of this field of engineering.
