Sam Bryant: Prompt 8

By: Sam Bryant

During my first semester of my freshmen year at Michigan State University. I was enrolled into two courses in engineering. In these courses both of my classes were divided in to groups of four. In both classes I met with each of the group at least three times a week. One of the engineering courses was a hands on class where my group was given a startup kit for a Lego robot. The kit contained various pieces and also instructions on how to code the robot using a specific software. The purpose of the project was to have the robot to be able to run on a given course where it had to be able to pick up a ball at a specific point and dropping it at another. By this being a hands on project, as a group we had to divide specific duties such as recording data, coding, maintenance and designing or designing to each member. Coming in as freshmen there are some engineering students that don’t have any experience coding. I happen to be one of those students. I had to learn fast and hands on was the best way, it gave me a visual of the task I was creating for the robot. After completing the project I learned that in my field I may come across times that learning a new skill is sometimes best hands on.

  1. I had to do the robot project as well and I didn't know how to code either. I thought it was very helpful to have a group to work with so we could all help each other. I think group work is a huge part of engineering so it's good we are starting group work early on.
