Megan Arlt: Women Stereotypes

Throughout the past century, stereotypes within the workforce have been established more than ever. The importance of making something of yourself has been the main idea drilled into kids’ today. As a soon to be women Engineer, I know first hand what it’s like to be stereotyped. Most people have the impression that Engineering should be made up of men and that you have to be some type of genius to be a women engineer. These stereotypes takes a huge impact of kids.  This idea comes from all over. As seen in a fairly familiar show to many, “The Big Bang Theory”, Amy, a neuroscientist, and Bernadette, a Microbiologist, play a key role in setting a stereotype for science and technology professionals. Both socially awkward and extremely smart, they set a standard for how women in the same professions act. The show also hits on the point of the ratio of women to men in the science and technology field. Looking at just the main characters from “The Big Bang Theory”, there are two women compared to four men scientist. This gives the impression that men should or do dominate the field of science. I feel that theses stereotypes are corrupting the way our future generation think about different jobs. The Engineering field was made up of mostly men in the past and unfortunately is still true but the amount of women of engineering is steadily increasing. In fact, Michigan State University in 2015 welcomed their largest class of women Engineers and I’m proud to be part of it.
